Active-Duty PAs Are Younger, More Diverse

A recent study published in Military Medicine maps the PA workforce across uniformed services and finds notable differences between Board Certified PAs on active duty and those not on active duty.

Using 2023 data from the NCCPA PA Professional Profile, researchers identified 12,146 Board Certified PAs who reported uniformed service status. Of those, 2,508, or 20.6%, were on active duty.

A Younger, More Diverse Force
“The data reveal a pivotal inflection point for the military PA profession,” said COL James J. Jones, Ph.D., PA-C, SP, U.S. Army, 11th Army PA Consultant to The Surgeon General and one of the study’s co-authors. “We are seeing a younger, more diverse, and increasingly specialized force—one that mirrors the evolving demographics of the nation and the complex medical demands of global operations.”
