PA Champions Importance of Men’s Health

As November marks Men’s Health Awareness Month, the goal isn’t just to talk about wellness—it’s to get men into the clinic.

Michael Sulewski, MMSc, PA-C, a Board Certified PA practicing in primary care in Charlotte, North Carolina, is working to overcome decades of cultural barriers that discourage men from seeking routine care.

Sulewski, who helped open the primary care clinic nearly five years ago, provides comprehensive primary care alongside services such as behavioral health, nutritional counseling and hormone replacement therapy. His focus on the male patient population is deliberate.

“Men’s health is important to me because a significant portion of my patient population is male,” Sulewski said. “While there are many clinicians who focus on women’s health, I’ve noticed that dedicated men’s health specialists are less common in primary care.”

Sulewski sees PAs as being perfectly positioned to address men’s primary health concerns, issues which are often referred to specialists such as urologists. For him, the interest is both professional and personal.

“I see a real need among my patients and, admittedly, I want to better understand my own health as well,” Sulewski said.
