Two PAs Show Students Untapped Career Option

Emelle Holmes-Drammeh, MPA, PA-C, and Kierstyn Block, PA-C, have been PA friends for 15 years. The pair are now on a mission to introduce middle and high school students in the Madison, Wisconsin, area to an impactful and attainable career as a PA.

Holmes-Drammeh recalls how, early in her career, her daughter mistakenly thought she was simply bringing coffee to the doctors.

“She was confused by the title ‘Physician Assistant,’” Holmes-Drammeh said. “That was my cue; I knew I had some work to do.”

Holmes-Drammeh highlights the importance of introducing students to the PA profession early, particularly before they enter college. She believes that if she had known about the career option earlier, her path could have been different.

“Representation matters,” she said. “The earlier students learn about the PA role, the better prepared they will be for their future careers. Exposure also enables them to align their studies with PA program prerequisites.”
