Mental Health Grants Aim to Empower PAs
To tackle the U.S. mental health crisis, the nccPA Health Foundation provides seed grants to Board Certified PAs, PA students and PA organizations for community-based mental health initiatives.
This initiative aligns with the national recognition of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Health Foundation invites all PAs and PA students to learn how they can use this grant year-round to fund impactful mental health initiatives.
Fostering Education, Reducing Stigma
Health Foundation Board member Tajuana D. Lordeus, DMSc, PA-C, CAQ-Psychiatry, discusses how the mental health grant has the potential to foster education and reduce stigma.
“The mental health grant is a tremendous opportunity to positively impact community health needs,” Lordeus said. “It provides funding specifically designed to educate others, reduce stigma around mental illness, raise awareness about available mental health services, and improve health equity, especially in local communities.”
Accessible Grant Application
For those unsure about applying for a grant, Lordeus described the application process as accessible and noted the staff offers personalized feedback.
“As someone who has found other grant processes intimidating, the user-friendly approach of the Health Foundation stands out,” Lordeus said. “Their supportive guidance helps applicants refine their proposals.”
To ensure longevity of these initiatives, Lordeus recommends using the mental health grant as seed money to cultivate partnerships across disciplines, including other PAs, providers, and community organizations.
“Planning with sustainability in mind from the beginning is crucial,” she said. “By partnering with local businesses, civic groups and health care professionals, these grassroots efforts can grow into sustained community resources.”
