Summary of Board Actions and Issues

The NCCPA Board of Directors met on May 14, 2004. The following summary describes actions taken and issues addressed at that meeting.

Review of PANRE Passing Standard

The Board received an in-depth presentation from Dr. Raja Subhiyah, senior psychometrician of the National Board of Medical Examiners, regarding the recommendation of the 2004 Content-Based Standard-Setting Committee that was constituted and convened earlier this year to review the PANRE passing standard. After engaging in an intensive multi-step modified Angoff procedure, the committee recommended changing the passing standard. The Board discussed the committee’s recommendation at length and in the end decided that additional information would be needed to make the decision.  The Board then voted to table its discussion of the recommendation until its August 2004 meeting.

NCCPA revisits the standard for each NCCPA examination every three years.

Discussion of Issues Related to Credentialing of Surgical PAs

The Board discussed issues that have arisen since the November 2003 decision to indefinitely suspend the administration of NCCPA’s Surgery Exam at the end of 2004. Specifically, the Board engaged in discussion of the emergence of requirements in at least one hospital system for PAs to demonstrate some specific training and/or examination in surgery prior to being granted surgical privileges. No action was taken in response to the issue.

 Other Issues and Decisions

  • The Board approved revisions to the organization’s Articles of Incorporation to reflect NCCPA’s 2003 change of address.

  • The Board approved administrative revisions to governing policy that simplify the process for appointing and/or selecting members for NCCPA’s test committees, standard-setting committees and corresponding item writers.

Next Meeting

The Board and its committees will meet August 27-29, 2004 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
