Summary of NCCPA Board Actions and Issues

The NCCPA Board of Directors met for their annual retreat on February 22-24, 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The following summary describes the actions taken and topics discussed at that meeting.

New Board Members Welcomed

NCCPA welcomed four new directors whose terms all began January 1, 2008: Frederick Blum, MD, FACEP, FAAP, American College of Emergency Medicine appointee; James Cannon, PA-C , PA Director-at-Large; John Coombs, MD, American Academy of Pediatrics; and Larry Simonsmeier, JD, Public Director-at-Large.

Information Sessions Focused on Workforce Trends & Opportunities

One of the key functions of NCCPA's annual retreat is to gather information from the environment to facilitate discussion and provide guidance to the organization. As a result, the NCCPA Board of Directors participated in three informational updates that focused on the demographic and environmental forces and trends that have shaped the PA profession to date and those that will influence its future development. In addition and in recognition of the close relationship PAs have with physicians, similar information about the physician workforce was also presented.

Strategic Discussion Provided Guidance to NCCPA Committees & Task Forces

NCCPA's Board of Directors provided guidance to various NCCPA committees regarding potential strategic opportunities for the organization. The discussion focused in three key areas: (1) Brainstorming potential products and services the organization could offer in the future, (2) Gaining a greater understanding of the profession's development internationally and discussion on if and how NCCPA may be able to contribute to that effort, and (3) funding the NCCPA Foundation to ensure its sustainability.

Organization Goals Approved

The NCCPA Board of Directors reaffirmed support for its three Board goals and added a fourth goal to reflect the important work conducted by the NCCPA Foundation in support of the NCCPA and its strategic priorities. The goals include:

•  NCCPA will be an essential indicator of PA competence and will utilize a competencies-based approach to refine its certification and recertification programs and to develop new products and services for certified PAs.

•  Through the exchange of knowledge, expertise and resources with others, NCCPA will continue to enhance the reputation of the organization and the visibility of and appreciation for certified physician assistants.

•  NCCPA will use technology and research to be responsive, innovative, and effective in addressing the interests of the public and other stakeholders.

•  Through its partnership with the NCCPA Foundation, NCCPA will support research, education and other initiatives that promote excellence among certified physician assistants and benefit the public.

The Board also adopted strategic outcomes to track and assess progress toward the Board-approved goals.
