Summary of NCCPA Board Actions and Issues

The NCCPA Board of Directors convened for their fifth annual strategic planning retreat in Sedona , Arizona on February 9-11, 2007 . The purpose of this retreat was to focus on board development and to assess the organization’s strategic priorities.

On Friday, NCCPA Board and staff members participated in individual and group exercises geared toward better understanding how individuals and groups work together. Led by a third-party facilitator, these strategic development exercises illuminated the important role that personality preferences and styles have in the successful functioning of groups.

The facilitator devoted Saturday and Sunday to the re-evaluation of NCCPA’s strategic priorities. NCCPA Board and staff members engaged in a number of facilitator-led activities to determine the strategic directions that the organization should pursue to meet the needs of its stakeholders. These efforts helped the Board accomplish the following objectives:

  • The Board discussed the need and desirability of an organization vision and provided feedback to staff on the development of a vision statement. The Board charged staff with creating a vision statement for review by the Board later this year.
  • The Board reaffirmed their commitment to the NCCPA’s mission: NCCPA assures that certified PAs meet professional standards of knowledge and skills.
  • The Board modified the language used in two of NCCPA’s three goals:

Goal #1 : NCCPA will be an essential indicator of PA competence and will utilize a competencies-based approach to refine its certification and recertification programs and to develop new products and services for certified PAs.

Goal #2 : Through the exchange of knowledge, expertise and resources with others, NCCPA will continue to enhance the reputation of the organization and the visibility of and appreciation for certified physician assistants. (Unchanged.)

Goal #3 : NCCPA will use technology and research to be responsive, innovative and effective in addressing the interests of the public and other stakeholders.

  • The Board adopted strategic outcomes in support of the organization’s goals to track and assess progress toward those goals.
