NCCPA and AAPA representatives met on Dec. 15 and emerged
with the following statement of consensus.

Consensus Statement

Representatives of the AAPA and NCCPA met in Chicago on 12/15/01 to discuss the recent issues of concern, find common ground and understanding, and move forward on building a stronger relationship to benefit the profession. As stated at the beginning of the meeting: "Things go better if we work together."

Both groups agreed upon the following statements of principle:

  • The AAPA and NCCPA recognize the benefit of continued dialogue on issues of mutual concern regarding the profession and PA certification.
  • The leaders of both organizations agree to meet regularly to reaffirm effective communications.
  • NCCPA commissioners are encouraged to effectively communicate with their appointing organizations in a timely manner on appropriate issues that do not compromise their fiduciary responsibility to the NCCPA.
  • The NCCPA has made significant and appropriate effort towards opening its processes. These include the following:

    1. Placing a summary of NCCPA board meeting action items on its Web site.
    2. Inviting leaders of appointing organizations, AAPA and other organizations as appropriate to make presentations at Board meetings at least yearly.
    3. Charging NCCPA committee chairs to make use of the extensive resource list of individuals with expertise on issues being addressed by the committees.
    4. NCCPA wishes to continue holding the open forum for all PAs at the AAPA annual meeting at a time during the conference when the majority of the conference goers are still in attendance.
    5. NCCPA will continue its constituency outreach by having NCCPA leaders speak at constituent meetings, as invited, to discuss current NCCPA issues of interest and certification/recertification processes.

Other means of refining the communication process may include maximizing communication between the leadership of AAPA and NCCPA, as well as holding a cross- organizational meeting of all interested parties to discuss issues of mutual concern on an annual basis.
