Eligibility Requirements

You are eligible to take the PANRE recertification exam if you:
• hold valid NCCPA certification and
• are in the fifth or sixth year of the certification maintenance cycle.

Registration Information

Advance registration and payment of $300 is required, but you may schedule your exam anytime (depending on testing center availability) within the 180 day timeframe established for you to take the exam based on the successful completion of all required materials to NCCPA.

When registering for PANRE, please consider the following requirements:

  • You have 180 days from the beginning of your exam timeframe to the end of your timeframe in which to take the exam. These dates will be reflected on your exam acknowledgement.
  • If you apply late in your sixth year, your timeframe will be shorter than 180 days to ensure you take the test prior to your certification expiring.
  • If your certification expires this year, you must register at least 45 days before the end of the year.
  • You may only take PANRE once in any 90-day period and you may only take PANRE twice in your fifth year and twice in your sixth year.
  • There will be no testing between Dec. 22-31.

PAs recertifying through PANRE will have a new choice to make. While 60% of the generalist exam will cover the same content as always, the remaining 40% can be directed in one of three areas:

•  Adult medicine
•  Surgery
•  Primary care

This new option gives PAs the opportunity to focus more of the exam on their general area of practice-or continue with ?business as usual? by choosing the ?primary care? option.

If you choose the new option, the PANRE exam will still be a generalist exam, you will just have the option of having more generalist questions in one of the areas listed above.

No matter which option you choose, the content blueprint remains the same because it is still a generalist exam.

As always, each exam will be equated for difficulty so no matter which version you take, your exam will be no harder or easier statistically speaking. The exam will still be scored as a single exam and you will still receive a single score. In fact, your score report will not even show whether you chose to focus your exam in adult medicine, surgery or primary care.

When you pass, you will receive the same credential as always. This is not a vehicle for specialty recognition, just a way to better align the general certification exam with your area of practice.

Self Assessment

To assist PAs in assessing their readiness for PANRE, NCCPA has designed a self assessment that you can take anytime during your certification maintenance cycle – even after you’ve already registered for a recertification exam.

The self assessment includes 120 multiple-choice questions that have been extracted from the actual test item banks, which provides you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the format and style of actual exam questions. In addition, the online assessment is designed to reflect the time constraints (1 minute per question) associated with the actual exam, which allows you the opportunity to ensure that you can effectively manage your exam time.

PAs register online for the self assessment and may immediately begin the 120-minute assessment or choose to complete it later at a more convenient time. The self assessment will be available for 180 days from the registration date. Priced at $35, the self assessment is a tool to assist you in assessing your relative strengths and weaknesses as you prepare for the recertification exam.
