We are glad that you are interested in regaining your certification! There are two ways to regain your certification. If you meet certain requirements, you may be able to have your certification reinstated. If you do not meet the requirements for reinstatement, you can regain certification by passing PANCE or – if you've fulfilled special CME requirements – by passing the computer-based PANRE or the Web-based, take-at-home Pathway II recertification exam. Both options are described below.

Reinstatement:
You may qualify for reinstatement if the reason your certification lapsed was due to an administration function, such as a failure to log CME hours or make any fee payments. This option does not apply to PAs who do not finish earning the required CME hours before
Dec. 31 of the certification expiration year or do not pass a recertification exam by the end of their six-year cycle.

The reinstatement fee is $250 minus any certification maintenance fees that are received by Dec. 31 of the certification expiration year. All items that are outstanding have to be submitted within six months after certification lapses.

Regaining:
To be eligible to attempt to regain certification via PANRE or Pathway II, you must log 300 hours of CME earned during the six-year period ending on the day of application and payment submission. At least 150 of the total required CME hours must be Category I hours. Also, 100 of the total hours have to be earned during the last two years leading up to the submission of the application and payment with 50 of them being Category I hours. Physician Assistants with an expired certification cannot log CME online and will be required to submit any additional required CME to NCCPA on a CME Logging for Regaining Form.

No CME hours are required to take the PANCE exam to attempt to regain certification. The table below illustrates those requirements.

Exam A Total of 300 CME
Hours Earned…
Including at Least
100 CME Hours Earned…
PANCE Do not need CME hours
PANRE During the six-year period leading up to the submission of application and payment During the two-year period leading up to the submission of application and payment
Pathway II Jan. 8, 2004-Jan. 8, 2010 Jan. 8, 2008-Jan. 8, 2010

Please keep in mind that if you plan to take Pathway II, you must also fulfill that exam’s 100-point elective component requirement in addition to the 300-hour CME requirement earned during the last six years.
